Campsites in Prekmurje: thermal campsites, stopovers, and motorhome rental

Avtodom na termalnem kampu v Moravskih Toplicah
Prekmurje is a more rewarding destination for a campervan trip than many people expect: flat terrain, quiet roads, thermal water and campsites that are often open all year round. The best known is Camping Terme 3000 in Moravske Toplice, and the Pomurje region also has campsites at Terme Banovci, Kamp Štrk near Polana, the campsite at Thermal Resort Lendava and Murania. In this guide we cover what each of them offers, where you can stay overnight in a campervan outside campsites, what to check before you arrive, and roughly how much it costs to rent a campervan from Ljubljana.

Why visit Prekmurje by campervan

Prekmurje is not a region you can discover in a single afternoon. Its best sides are spread out: thermal spa towns on the edge of Goričko, villages with vineyards above Lendava, mills and wetlands along the Mura River, and lakes where you stop just for a swim or lunch. That is exactly why a campervan is so practical here. In the morning you are at the spa, in the afternoon on a bike among the fields, and in the evening at the other end of the region, without checking into a new hotel or carrying luggage around. Pomurje is a flat region with more than 250 km of marked cycling routes, and the regional tourist guide highlights the Vinarium observation tower and Bukovniško Lake among its sights. For travellers who swear by peace and quiet, good food and a warm pool at the end of the day, it is one of the most relaxed routes in Slovenia. From Ljubljana, Moravske Toplice is roughly a two-hour drive, mostly on the motorway. That makes Prekmurje suitable for a long weekend, not just for a longer holiday.

Camping Terme 3000 in Moravske Toplice

This is the campsite people search for most often when they think about camping in Prekmurje, and the reason is clear. Camping Terme 3000 is open all year and gives guests access to the thermal park and sports activities. On the same page, the campsite states that reception hours vary by month and that dogs are allowed under certain rules, so read the conditions before arriving with a pet. What makes Moravske Toplice special is the water. Terme 3000 uses black thermo-mineral water, typical of this part of Pomurje, in its wellness and health programmes. The campsite also has an outdoor pool, which makes it popular with families who want to combine swimming with cycling around Goričko. Thanks to its location, Moravske Toplice is an excellent base: to the north the road climbs into the Goričko hills, and to the south you are quickly in Murska Sobota or on your way to Lendava.

Terme Banovci

Terme Banovci lies on the Prlekija side of the Mura River, but travellers almost always include it on the same route as Prekmurje. It is a campsite at a thermal spa, with the emphasis on swimming and relaxed stays. As Banovci and Moravske Toplice are close together, many people combine them in one trip: a few nights on one side of the river, a few on the other.

Kamp Štrk near Polana

Kamp Štrk at the Lovenjak Estate (Lovenjakov dvor) in Polana is a smaller, homelier choice near Murska Sobota. It is open all year and accepts camping cards, which is welcome news for anyone travelling in the shoulder seasons. If you are drawn more to the countryside, storks nesting on chimneys and cycling on the flat than to water parks, this is the place to stop.

Thermal Resort Lendava

In the south-east of Prekmurje, almost at the border with Hungary and Croatia, lies Lendava. The campsite at the thermal complex is a good choice if you want to explore the Lendava Hills and the Vinarium observation tower, which the Pomurje tourist guide lists among the region’s main attractions. Lendava is also a natural starting point if you are continuing your trip into Hungary.

Murania

Murania is a lesser-known name on the list of Pomurje campsites. Together with the region’s other campsites, it is part of an offer where the landscape invites you to cycle, enjoy local food and discover folk traditions. Check opening times and facilities on the campsite’s website before you arrive.

Motorhome stopovers: Bukovniško Lake and the network across Slovenia

Not every night has to be spent at a campsite. Slovenia has more than 150 motorhome stopovers, divided into three groups: temporary car parks without services, stopovers with partial services or services by arrangement, and stopovers with full facilities. For a detailed overview by region, see our campervan route plan for Slovenia. Near Moravske Toplice, at Bukovniško Lake, there is a designated motorhome stopover, where parking cost €25 in 2023, and there is also an adventure park by the lake. The lake is a popular autumn destination when the surrounding forests change colour, while in summer it offers shade and tranquillity. Check the current year’s price on site. Forested shore of Bukovniško Lake in autumn, near the motorhome stopover in Prekmurje, Slovenia At stopovers there is a simple rule: keep enough fresh water in the campervan and an empty waste-water tank, as not every stopover offers a disposal point and hook-ups.

Campsite in Radenci: which Radenci?

Many people search for a campsite in Radenci, but there are two important places with this name in Slovenia. Radenci in Pomurje is a spa town right next to Prekmurje. Radenci Spa is known for its mineral water and thermal baths, and the town also hosts the Three Hearts Marathon every year. From Radenci you are quickly in Moravske Toplice, Banovci or Murska Sobota, so the town makes a good stop on a trip around Pomurje, even if you stay overnight at one of the nearby campsites. Radenci on the Kolpa, on the other hand, is in Bela Krajina, at the opposite end of Slovenia. There is a riverside campsite there which, according to its 2023 price list, charged €13 per adult for an overnight stay with a motorhome. If you are looking for river swimming and shady forests, it is a different but equally beautiful destination. Just make sure you enter the right place in your sat nav.

What to check before you head to a campsite

Campsites in Slovenia must meet basic requirements. According to the national SPOT portal, a campsite must have a reception and level, well-kept camping areas, electric hook-ups for at least 40% of pitches, running water and waste bins. This means electricity may not be available on every pitch, so ask for it explicitly when booking. Before you arrive, also check:
  1. Reception hours. At year-round campsites they are often shorter in winter and the shoulder season. If you will arrive late, arrange your arrival in advance.
  2. Pet rules. Dogs are allowed at many campsites, but with restrictions on areas, leads and extra fees.
  3. Camping cards. Some campsites, such as Kamp Štrk, accept them, so keep yours handy.
  4. Spa entry. Whether swimming is included in the pitch price or charged separately varies from campsite to campsite.
  5. Vignette. To drive on Slovenian motorways you need a vignette, while vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must be registered in the DarsGo system and fitted with a DarsGo device. When you pick up your vehicle, we tell you what applies to the campervan you are renting.
For packing, use this overview of camping trip essentials, then adapt the list: your campervan already has a kitchen and beds, so mainly add swimwear, towels for the spa, cycling gear and warm clothes for evenings by the Mura.

How much does campervan rental cost

The price of renting a campervan depends on the vehicle, the length of the rental and the dates. With us, the basics are simple and published on the vehicle pages:
Vehicle Daily rental Weekly rental Final cleaning
Mercedes V Marco Polo from €125 per night from €110 per night €80 per rental
Ford Transit Nugget Plus from €125 per night from €110 per night €80 per rental
The longer the rental, the lower the price per night. As a rough guide: a weekly rental of seven nights at the base price of €110 per night comes to €770, or €850 including the €80 final cleaning. This is a calculation at the base price; you will see the final amount for your dates when booking. When comparing offers from different rental companies, pay attention to what is included in the price. Insurance, cleaning and extra equipment costs add up quickly, so check:
  • Insurance. With us, basic insurance is included in the price.
  • Assistance. Our customers have 24/7 assistance.
  • Equipment. A kitchen, a fixed toilet and beds for several people are part of our vehicles, not extras.
  • Cleaning. With us, final cleaning is clearly stated at €80 per rental.
  • Costs on the road. Fuel, the vignette, campsites and spa entry are not part of the rental fee, so include them in your budget.

Suggested route: four days in Prekmurje

If you have a long weekend, this is a tried-and-tested rhythm:
  1. Day 1: Ljubljana – Moravske Toplice. Pick up the vehicle in Ljubljana, drive along the motorway towards Pomurje, spend the afternoon at the thermal park and the first night at Camping Terme 3000.
  2. Day 2: Goričko and Bukovniško Lake. Cycle or drive through the hills, have lunch with bograč (a hearty local goulash) or dödoli (potato dumplings), and spend the afternoon by the lake. Stay overnight at a campsite or the stopover.
  3. Day 3: Lendava and Vinarium. Take in the view from the Vinarium tower over the Lendava Hills, stroll around the town and spend the evening at the Lendava thermal spa.
  4. Day 4: Radenci and the way back. Take a walk in the spa park, then drive back towards Ljubljana.
If you have more time, you can extend the route to a week and link it with Štajerska (Styria) or the Alps. You will find more ideas in our one-week Slovenia road trip by campervan and among our weekend campervan trips.

Our view: why we recommend Prekmurje off-season too

As a family business from Ljubljana, we love advising travellers on where to go. We often suggest Prekmurje to those who have little time or are travelling outside summer. The thermal campsites here stay open when campsites on the coast and in the Alps have already closed, and warm water after a chilly autumn day is a pleasure that is hard to find elsewhere at that time of year. We have also noticed that the flat landscape is ideal for a first rental. The roads are quiet, there are no steep mountain passes, and every town is within a short drive. Compact campervans such as the Mercedes V Marco Polo and Ford Nugget Plus really come into their own here: you can drive into narrow village streets, park by the spa and cook dinner in peace in the evening. Our advice: do not try to see everything. Choose two campsites and one stopover, and leave time for cycling and good food. Prekmurje opens up to slow travellers.
